2. The project, known as Pebble Mine, is very unpopular in Alaska. That's because it threatens the salmon fishery in the area, which is the largest in the world. It's important commercially, recreationally, and for Alaska Natives https://popular.info/p/the-scandal-up-north
3. On the other hand, there is a lot of MONEY behind the project. Sullivan opposed a move by Obama in 2014 to shelve the project and supported Trump's effort to revive it.

4. As the mine become more unpopular, Sullivan started saying some more critical things
In August, when the Army Corps said it wouldn't approve it w/o changes to the plan, Sullivan said he supported the decision

5. Then, on 9/21, explosive tapes were published that captured the CEOs of the companies developing the mine saying Sullivan's position was just to help him get reelected and, through a backchannel, they've been assured he wouldn't hold up the project https://popular.info/p/the-scandal-up-north
6. It was only 3 DAYS AFTER THOSE TAPES WERE RELEASED that Sullivan came out with a definitive statement opposing the development of Pebble Mine
