Well, yesterday I ask the question about whether a good caddy or a good coach is more vital to a young player embarking on their career on tour. My answer is a CADDY!! No one can do it alone and the one person a player spends more time with than anyone is the caddy.
Trust is developed and it comes with time and experience. When a player has a caddy for enough time to develop trust, that caddy can influence the player like no one else can, good and bad. When the caddy is really on board he sees things sooner than anyone can, bad habits.
My caddy Freddie Burns, that was on the bag for most of my career was caddying when I beat Tiger. After putting out on 17, all the way to 18 tee he was telling me repeatedly that I was the best driver in the game then. The fact that I trust him made those comments creditable.
Freddie did all he could to influence me hitting driver that day. Because I believed in his confidence in me, I hit driver right down the waterline in the middle of the fairway for the last shot like we wanted. Freddie was my friend and my caddy and we won together that day.
He knew I needed to hit driver on 18 because Tiger was hitting his stinger 2 iron that went about 260. My driver was all I had that I could out drive Tiger with and we would need the last shot to know how aggressive we would need to be. A coach couldn’t help me in that situation.
