I know everyone is saying Mason won’t be fired, and maybe he won’t. He’s been marginally successful at Vanderbilt....more so than a lot of coaches have been. Here’s the ultimate problem with that though...
We have seen more talent come out of Vanderbilt the last several years than ever before. Joejuan was a high level pick, Vaughn was a high level pick, Skule, Sherfield, Lipscomb, Pinkney, Shurmur, and Odeyingbo all found themselves on pro rosters at some point.
Adam Butler as well. So what’s the hold up? All these guys haven’t lead to a bowl win yet. Both Orji brothers, Moore, and several other guys on our roster are potential draft picks as well, this team is really talented and more athletic than Vandy usually is
The ultimate problem though, is we can’t land certain guys unless they transfer in. As great as Johnson is, he is a rare win. Vaughn and Langham both transferred in. And then there are outright misses, like Zaire Jones a great safety for Youngstown State.
The other downside is the unnecessary burning of redshirt years. Now that the rules have changed it plays into our favor, but so many of these guys played early despite not being physically ready to play.
The last thing I can say is culture, the reason the Franklin teams win is because they grab players who know how to win in big games. They develop them and give them confidence. The reality is Vanderbilt can’t be a strong defensive team who runs the ball a lot
Because that is the thing most other schools do. So I feel like these are talking points to be had for sure. Do I love the team? Absolutely. Do I believe in elements of the team? Of course. Do I think it’s take too long to get where we are now? Yes, entirely.
