Dusserah Mahatam THREAD: This year Dusserah Mahatam will run from October 17-25th
Like Diwali/ Deepmala/Bandi Chorr Diwas , Holi/Holla Mohalla and Vaisakhi/Khalsa Saajna Diwas, Dusserah/VijayDasmi is also one of the ਤਿਉਹਾਰ (festivals) which Guru Gobind Singh Ji instructed their Khalsa to celebrate; whichhas been neglected by mainstream panth.
It came to the point where dusserah was celebrated within the Nihang Singh Dals and at Takhat Sri Hazur Sahib. It's only within the last decade that, due to the parchar done by Takhat Sahib, the Sampardas and Dals, this tradition is making its way back into the panth
The Khalsa celebrates Dusserah by doing Shastar Pooja (the warship of weapons. This includes thoroughly cleaning and doing maintenance of our shastars, displaying them on a platform and reading certain Bir Ras chapters from Dasam Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji for 10 days.
The First 9 Days are refered to as Navratre and the 10th day is Dusserah or VijayDasmi (should be noted that this year months of the Bikrami calendar are irregular so dusserah is one day Shorter and only 9 days this year).
Historically Dusserah is the festival to commemorate the defeat of Ravan by Sri Ram Chandar and VijayDasmi is to celebrate Durga defeating the Dhaints. While during this time ppl are consumed by fireworks, plays and other manmant, 10ve Patshah kept the warrior traditions alive.
References of Dusserah being celebrated by sikhs is narrated in many historical text of the Sikh Panth such as Sri GurPartaap Suraj Parkash Granth, Sri Gur Pad Prem Parkash Granth, Bansavalinama and Gurbilas p10.
It should also be noted that in the Sodak Committee report of Dasam Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji of 1898, it mentions that Dusserah celebrated at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib in the past.
