the pros, cons, what’s allowed, and what’s prohibited, an informative thread!
i have discussed with several artist mutuals about this topic and each of them have thrown in their two sense so i will be contributing their comments into this thread.
now let’s talk about the pros of tracing;
tracing isn’t exactly bad. it’s actually extremely beneficial to beginning artists. it can teach artists how certain elements flow, proper placement, and muscle memory.

cons of tracing;
tracing is beneficial to an extent. it’s not good if you trace everything and don’t make an attempt to learn how to draw or create art. it’s basically cheating if you overuse the method.

the next two topics will be about posting traced artwork
what’s allowed in tracing art;
if you’re a hobbyist, posting traced art is okay (IF ITS FROM THE ORIGINAL TV SHOW, GAME, MOVIE, ETC)
if you’re a hobbyist, posting traced art is okay (IF ITS FROM THE ORIGINAL TV SHOW, GAME, MOVIE, ETC)
example; there’s a glass art trend going on and tracing from original art works in that case is okay. so is if you’re creating a cake and you need to trace the piece etc.
referencing and tracing are not the same thing. referencing a piece means you’re taking the image (NOT FROM AN INDIE ARTIST BUT FROM THE OFFICIAL ARTWORK UNLESS YOU GET PERMISSION) and looking at it while creating your piece to get a general understanding on where to place things
artists use reference on the daily. a bunch of them use it for different and unique poses, clothes, hair, coloring, etc.
theres also the type of referencing on when you want to reference an official artwork from a tv show etc. those are completely fine! as long as you put your art work side by side with the exact image you referenced. (next tweet will provide how to post referenced pieces).
i got permission from this artist to qrt their artwork for the sake of this thread https://twitter.com/phantomsoupe/status/1300087152705847297
last but not least, what’s prohibited when it comes to traced art;
this one is a big issue but CLAIMING traced art as your own artwork is a big NO. even if you did your own coloring, or if it’s from the original art work, it’s still not okay.

if you do something like this, you’re basically giving yourself and your viewers the green light to also trace an indie artists art which is EXTREMELY harmful for all parties.
even if you claim you traced the art, it’s still prohibited in several communities to post the traced art.
if you’re tracing art, please keep the piece to yourself and don’t claim it.

anyways that’s the end of this thread, thank you for reading.
