I scored an incredibly cheap ($222.22) 40GbE switch last week. Unfortunately, it arrived looking like it’d been air dropped out of the back of the FedEx plane.
The rear-left corner was bent, and the main switching ASIC’s heatsink hold downs had been bashed loose, leaving the pins and tension springs rattling around loose in the unit, along with the heatsink being banged around and having many of its fins get bent.
After stripping apart the switch, I repasted the switching ASAIC, straightened out the heatsink pins, put the heatsink back on, straightened the chassis out, reassembled it, and miracle of miracles, it booted.
It also seems that one of the fan packs is has failed; although I need to investigate exactly what happened to it, since it physically looks ok.
