Long thread from a student doing a postgraduate diploma in communications studies with a digital media major on a quote from Judith Collins this morning “the problem with secondary schools now is there’s too much photography and too much media studies and all those woke subjects”
Let’s just skim over the money and international recognition the film industry brings into New Zealand, that’s already incredibly well documented.
I’d like to know what other subjects come under the ‘woke’ banner. I’m disturbed enough to see media studies there, I’d hate to see design also on the list.
On a personal level, media studies and design were my two favourite subjects in high school, I started university with the intent to major in film studies but ended up finishing a BA with a design major.
I’m now doing a postgraduate diploma in communications studies with a digital media major, within that, the most eye opening paper I have taken is digital strategies.
A couple of things I have learnt from this are that more and more of the world’s largest companies are embracing ‘design thinking’ because it lends itself to being able to empathise with customers and delivering solutions with them in mind: https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/article/what-is-design-thinking-and-why-is-it-so-popular">https://www.interaction-design.org/literatur...
Some of the stats around just how much companies that embrace design thinking VS those that don’t are staggering, hugely outperforming them on the S&P index and delivering far greater returns: https://blog.experiencepoint.com/8-stats-that-prove-design-thinking-pays-off">https://blog.experiencepoint.com/8-stats-t...
A considerable amount of companies now have a ‘Chief Digital Officer’ “an individual who helps a company, a government organization or a city drive growth by converting traditional "analog" businesses to digital ones using the potential of modern online technologies and data"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_digital_officer

This">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chie... position commonly sits one band below the CEO and in some companies is even on an equal footing.
It’s now my 10-15 year goal to become one (if the comedy thing doesn’t pan out). A kid who goofed off with tape to tape editing, dreaming of being the next George Lucas, now has a clear pathway to being a business leader as a result of starting on a road paved by ‘woke’ subjects.
The dismissal of this pathway came from the party that is meant to be the one strong with the economy, the one I am told is filled to the brim with successful business leaders.
I’m shocked that an adult student has an understanding of this, but the leader of this ‘best for business’ party has failed to show a basic understanding of the direction business is heading.
I really hope that some of Ms Collins’ friends in the business community she’s so popular with will have a word with her about not calling for the closure of a path to creating the kinds of thinkers that can help our economy thrive.
It might just be a dog whistle to some of her older and/or blue collar followers, as opposed to something she genuinely believes. I can only hope that’s the case, it could be one of her more alarming statements if she genuinely believes it.
Imagine the potential lack of productivity if future generations of these thinkers are told what they’re doing is not worthwhile, if these round pegs are shoved into square holes.
It’s not my intent to start an argument about every policy from every party, I’m not trying to convince you how to vote. If all the other issues still have you voting blue, that’s fine, we’re still friends, but I encourage you to lobby her to open her mind on this issue. /End!
