Addressing Dynamite’s fraudulent #1 run, a much needed thread:
let’s start with the chart manipulation:
we’re gonna focus on the most inorganic mess that is ‘Dynamite’, their first #1 hit on the billboard hot 100
dynamite had was expected to debut in the top 10 thanks to army buying power with only one version but then the desperation kicked in mid-week. a shocking 4 additional versions were made available for purchase
within no time, crazed fans gobbled all 5 versions (total) up and purchased as many as they could to inflate and boost sales as their best shot at securing a #1 was in pure sales as WAP was just about dominating even in sales on its 3rd week
by the end of the tracking week dynamite had achieved a record breaking debut of around 360k units in the USA, a surprising feat at first glance yes, but let’s break it down a lil bit more
dynamite had debuted with 360k units sold but how did they manage that? artists that pull in those kinda numbers in PURE SALES are to the likes of adele or taylor... and some artists are streaming giants like ariana, cardi or drake. but when we dive into it we see bts is neither.
the rules on purchasing a multitude of songs is that there is only a limit of 4 copies ur able to purchase off of one credit card. but that only applies to one version. each different version refreshes this count. so with 5 versions available the numbers add up quickly
5*4=20, so if we were to broadly assume (which is very likely the case) thats these fans purchased every available version... 360,000/20=18,000 meaning in retrospect, only 18,000 fans are needed to purchase the song 20 times to get those big numbers
and considering just how large and dedicated army is, i wouldn’t be surprised if that’s exactly what happened. AND TO TOP IT OFF!! the song in its first tracking week was discounted to 69 cents. for ALL versions. so it would only cost around $14 to purchase 20 versions that week
so with all this in mind, its really not a stretch at all to say that the sales were inorganic and fan produced. there is no real evidence that this was the general public’s purchasing, and interest in the song. moving away from this for a lil bit. let’s look at streams :)
it’s 2020 yall, pure sales is NOT the main consumption source for music in the US as we can see here 85% of the music industry earns from streaming sources such as spotify, apple music and youtube music. keep this in mind. also some of yall rlly forgot the bb100 is a us chart...
for there to be a #1 debut song in the US, there should be a huge number of streams right? considering it is the biggest consumption source...right?
wrong. let’s compare dynamite to WAP, the other recent #1. WAP debuted with ≈90 million streams in its first week. laugh now cry later which was blocked from #1 by wap debuted with ≈70 million streams. dynamite?
dynamite debuted with less than half of the streams then what wap had in its 3RD WEEK of charting. ppl are gonna say some bs like “oh wAP hAS hUGE plaYLisTinG” shut up. wap is a huge song because it IS the moment. there’s a reason it’s 3x platinum (USA!!)in less then 60 days...
