I think comedy can and should be critiqued. I think critiquing comedy as if it were intended to be accurate is...idk. I get it. But i also don't. Comedians are trying to make you laugh. First. We take liberties with facts to get there.
And that whole "there's some truth in every joke" doesn't mean that the person telling the joke believes everything they're saying is fact. It means they found a thing people would recognize as true, and then found a way to pervert it into funny.
Again, i don't have a problem with critiquing comedy and it's impact. I recognize how bigoted jokes can normalize bigotry. I get it. I promise. But once you start doing dissertations on a comedian's lack of understanding based on the way they shaped a joke? Idk about that part
For example, i made jokes comparing the way the government was handling the debt ceiling by comparing it to how individual citizens have to budget. Any basic economics class would point out the difference between macro and micro economics and how that comparison doesn't hold up.
The joke requires you to overlook that for the sake of laughter. Much like sitcoms have you overlook that most of the "situations" wouldn't be handled the way they are handled. That's where the "com" comes from.
Whatever. I just felt like tweeting i guess. Laugh or don't, I'm going to find the funny and live with the consequences.
I should add, this was in response to a thread i saw on my TL about Chris Rock's monologue. Because i know people get to assuming and I'll just save you the workout
