list of Taylor Swift songs about important issues, not “heartbreak” (as if writing about heartbreak is a bad thing anyways)

A thread
Tied Together With A Smile (2006)

About her friend’s struggle with an eating disorder, likely anorexia.
The Best Day (2008)

A song dedicated to her mom and moms everywhere. Appreciation song for mothers since mothers are generally overlooked in society.

Feminist song about not letting men’s opinions get to you. Women can succeed even when others think they will fail. The music video touches on LGBT rights and bullying.
Never Grow Up (2010)

Heartbreaking song about the transition from childhood to adulthood, something we all must face.
The Lucky One (2012)

Shows the anxiety faced with fame. People are brutally discarded by society when they are no longer deemed young and shiny.

Anti-cheating anthem that tells of the pain of an unhealthy relationship. We all face cheaters in our lives.
Ronan (2012)

Heart-shattering song dedicated to the mother of a boy who passed of cancer a few years ago. The title is the boy’s name, and it describes the pain of having a loved one with cancer. All the proceeds go to cancer research.
Welcome To New York (2014)

Song about the acceptance of New York, and how people can be more like themselves, especially the LGBT community.
Blank Space (2014)

Song about taking back your own narrative when others make up false statements about you and run with them. A powerful and satirical song that defined a generation.
Out Of The Woods (2014)

Song about anxiety in a relationship. How not knowing the status of a relationship can be tumultuous in one’s brain.
Clean (2014)

Tells of somewhat letting go of the anxiety one faced prior, and looking towards a positive future.
Dancing With Our Hands Tied (2017)

She wonders about what people will think about her and Joe, and if they can work out since her reputation has been dragged through the mud. She has anxiety about what society and Joe thinks about her.
The Man (2019)

Powerful feminist song about the double standards in society. She describes how men are allowed to act with impulse, irrationality, anger, and cockiness, but women are put down for the same actions.
The Archer (2019)

Anxious song where she wonders if someone will accept her as a lover. The pulsing synths are reminiscent of anxiety.
Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince (2019)

Her thoughts on the dystopian American political sphere post-2016. Calls out Trump his “boys will be boys” mindset.
Cornelia Street (2019)

Another song about anxiety, this time from the view of wondering if a relationship will last. She is so in love with Joe that if they ever broke up she could never walk Cornelia Street, where she lived, again.
Soon You’ll Get Better (2019)

Singing about her mother’s cancer from a POV many people have had before. She feels hopeless and prays for her mother to get better. She is distraught with her condition, wondering what she will do “if there’s no you”
You Need To Calm Down (2019)

Discusses LGBT+ rights in this song and how she will march alongside them. She calls out homophobes, trolls, and bullies. MV features LGBT+ castmembers and a call for action to sign the petition for the Equality Act to be discussed by the government.
Only The Young (2020)

Lifts up young voices as well as calls out the President again, saying his hands are stained with red. Discusses American political life as well, from 2016 onward.
the last great american dynasty (2020)

Feminist song about a woman who was wrongly cast out of her society decades ago.
mirrorball (2020)

Another song about her anxiety and how she is always trying to please people.
mad woman (2020)

Feminist song about her masters. She points out how women are supposed to be cool and collected; never angry, and society doesn’t like or accept a mad woman.
epiphany (2020)

Song about her grandfather’s war experience. She aligns that with our current pandemic, and how people have to hold hands through plastic in order to not spread the disease.
Outside of her music she has supported BLM, LGBT rights, feminism, and women’s rights. She has attacked the President numerous times for his racism and homophobia. Please watch Miss Americana as well.
