This... is bad art. This is inaccessible art. Tldr; this lady engraved “the body was already so fragile” in teeny tiny font on the edge of the pennies, and specifically went to bodegas to put the money into circulation to spread the message https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/01/nyregion/nyc-bodega-pennies-jill-magid.html?referringSource=articleShare">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/0...
And on top of those bodega owners having to take fucking rolls of pennies in exchange for their goods, and of course she tells them to *not* give those rolls and rolls of pennies to the bank, but *keep* them for customers so they “circulate faster”
And as you might’ve read above, she also had the gall to tell them to explain this slacktivist art project to their customers when they hand them their change... The gall to say “im not a protagonist, i wanna *disappear*” while trying to get other people to do your work for free
Aside from people not having time or not being able to understand bc of language barrier, etc - why are you putting this work out *explaining the tragedy of the pandemic* to the very people most at-risk/impacted by it?? Congratulations? What did you achieve? What did you expect??
The implication that people who dont care about this just dont *get* art is fucking classist - theyre doing their jobs and have to wake up every day hoping theyll have enough customers to scrape by bc theres no stimulus checks; LEAVE THEM ALONE
As I end this thread, I’m gonna drop another lil snippet in the article where they casually mention she EXHUMED A GUYS CORPSE AND TURNED IT INTO A DIAMOND
