1. 2. what you expect for the day,in full view of all Ss and Ts eg if students didn’t enter classrooms well enough the previous day, reinforce that routine ‘at this school we line up silently outside our classrooms, just like we are doing now. This is how we line up for lesson’
3. If students are constantly asking to go to the toilet, show students that you’ve got your teachers back on this ‘we go to the toilet before school, at break, and at lunchtime. We value every minute of every lesson,that is why we shouldn’t go during lesson’
4. If stdnts desks are cluttered make clear expectations of how they should look ‘our desks are pristine at this school! It should have a [insert equipment here]’ and then make sure during walk abouts that you model what ‘our desks look like at this school’ clarity for Ss and Ts
5. If manners are slipping ‘at this school we are super polite!If a teacher asks us to come here,we don’t moan or complain,we say ‘yes sir/miss’ whilst standing up straight. Even when we feel something is unfair, we maintain our manners. Because that’s the [insert school name]way
6. If reading is not valued ‘you are all reading at least 2 books, one in lesson and one for pleasure.I will ask you about what book you are reading at some point because I am interested!We will most likely have a conversation about it and I look forward to it!’
7. And of course, adapt above for all of the million and one things that could need gentle reminders for during a school week! We work with children and all of this needs to be explicitly taught [and reinforced] constantly.
8. Make sure you add in loads of warmth too. Smiles, positive reinforcement, let them know constantly when they are meeting the schools expectations. #SLTchat
