There are some people who take any critique of Francis’ participation in the sexism and patriarchal oppression that have plagued the Catholic tradition for centuries as equivalent to the attacks from Vigano and his allies. Those takes are disingenuous and ridiculous. 2/4

It is possible see Francis as a prophetic figure whose witness to the gospel is invaluable while also naming his shortcomings as a human? Yes. We all have shortcomings and a prophetic Pope is no exception (think of his own first answer to Spadaro in 2013). 3/4

If we pretend that he has no faults, we turn Francis and his papacy into an idol, not the witness of a humble pilgrim seeking to serve a pilgrim church. 4/4
