Like @the3million, I have been talking a lot about the need for physical proof of status for EU citizens. Going digital-only overnight is beyond irresponsible. I hope the Lords will support an amendment tomorrow to pave the way for a physical document as backup. It& #39;s vital.
Checking settled status is a process that involves several steps both for EU citizens like Estelle and those who need to check their status. To introduce this as a digital-only system overnight is bound to cause significant problems.
Not to offer physical proof of status is seriously detrimental. Discrimination is already happenig, as Magda experienced.
Jens also had problems recently when he tried to enter the UK.
The online system has already had outages, like when Suaad tried to check her status.
And for many vulnerable and older EU citizens like Giorgos, using an online system is problematic to begin with—many don’t have the digital skills and equipment needed.
But a digital-only status isn’t just a problem for EU citizens, but also those who need to check their status, including employers.
For landlords too a digital-only system for EU citizens means different and more complex processes.
Let’s not deny millions fo people their backup. Let’s not make them guinea pigs when consequences of the system failing can be severe. EU citizens are at home here. Not one of them should be #DeniedMyBackup.
