For anyone looking to get into tech or struggling to get responses from jobs, @GergelyOrosz's new book, http://thetechresume.com  is an excellent resource.

Here are my key takeaways from his livestream with @swyx on resumes, landing a job, & company differences.

(A thread) 🧵
1/ Referrals & Networking

There is so much noise when you send a resume - you need to stand out.

The best way to do this is get a referral from someone that works there.

To get referrals, build your network (on twitter, Linkedin, in person) and maintain them.
2/ Small company hiring insights

- Hiring manager typically looks at your resume
- More likely to care about cover letters, blogs, and a GitHub
- Typically care about a single tech stack
- Don't get nearly enough applications (look these up on @indeed & @AngelList)
3/ Large company hiring insights

- A recruiter will look at your resume
- Are more language-agnostic
- Don't care much about blogs, GitHubs, or cover letters
- Get a TON of applicants (Gergely mentioned 800 applicants in 1 week for 4 Uber internship positions)
4/ Getting your first dev job (1/2)

Tailor your resume to the job description and anything that makes you special to stand out

Remember that resumes are used for a binary purpose: getting a call back. After that, it's more about the on-site interview & coding challenges.
5/ Getting your first dev job (2/2)

Use your applications to build your portfolio and make your skills stronger. Put your take home coding assignments on Github (with READMEs, tests, ect...).

Contribute to OSS. The bar is so low and you can get relevant experience this way.
6/ Closing advice

While large companies don't care much about blog posts or GitHub, they are useful for long-term gain and
help build your reputation and career capital.

Don't get discouraged. Getting a software job has never been more competitive in this age of Covid. Grind.
7/ Free for new devs

P.S, the book is completely FREE if you've lost your job due to covid or are looking for your first dev job!

The final version is going to be launched by 10/7.
