Since DSA mutual aid is a topic floating around on twitter today I guess let me talk about some of the stuff we in @NorthNJDSA’s MAWG are doing.
We have 2 main projects:

First is our Newark-based project: Brick City Mutual Aid. This is a mass-org-styled group where DSA members and Newark residents have equal decision making ability and organizing autonomy. We felt this was critical to building power.
And it’s been really amazing... 2/

We’ve delivered groceries to roughly 200 families who have been struggling through the covid crisis. We’ve also connected people to important resources and found solutions to more specific problems.

We also held direct actions like a Brake Light Clinic and provided protest support—especially during this hot ass summer—and I’m psyched about restarting our food share actions.
We also made a pledge to help striking workers to help build solidarity and worker strength.

Recently, we started collecting books to deliver to our neighbors who are incarcerated—helping to build a connection between people affected by the police state.
Look out for our Abolitionist Zine

And we will be doing narcan distros soon and needle exchanges. 5/

That’s the first project at a glance. It can be complicated and messy and have its fits and starts, but staying political, staying horizontally organized, keeping folks engaged, late night meetings... but like, some of those community engagements make it all worth it. 6/

The second @NorthNJDSA mutual aid project is our Ramapough Lenape Solidarity Project.
The indigenous community of Ringwood, NJ has faced a lot over the decades like being exposed to industrial dumping and a superfund site that’s severely poisoned them. 7/

After a few meetings with them, and other members from a coalition to which we were invited to be apart of, including Four Directions Mutual Aid, and Khalsa Aid, and later our comrades in @njMATCH, we got a sense of how we could help. 8/

But my personal favorite part is being apart of the Munsee Three Sisters Medicine Farm.
For the Ramapough Lenape, food sovereignty and autonomy is critical not only to heal from decades of industrial poisoning, but also to pass on ancestral knowledge. 10/

This has also been a really excellent way to get our members in the outer counties, in suburb and exurban areas engaged in a major project.
It’s hard work and a bunch fundraising. But it’s soooo amazing and beautiful and rewarding. 11/

Recently, we raised enough money to buy a green house tunnel for farm. This is a big deal, and I’m so excited it finally materialized, but it’s still only the start. 12/

Working with Chief Mann and his family and the Ramapough Lenape community has been an incredibly humbling, educational, spiritual, and rewarding journey.
Be on the look out for direct actions on political issues and poli ed classes on indigenous issues. 13/

That’s out Mutual Aid Working Group! But there’s so much more on the horizon.
Under capitalism, communities are not having their needs met and are disempowered by design. It’s up to us to work toward collective liberation.
We must begin building the better world. ~Fin/
