I have argued before that abortion is such an overriding issue, and control of the Senate (to prevent Court packing) so uncertain, that Catholics should vote Trump.
However, the Holy Father’s encyclical “Fratelli Tutti,” released today (so close to the American election) is, inter alia, an extended repudiation of Trumpian populism—and thus of my own politics.
Accordingly, I will be voting for @BrianCarrollASP.
“Fratelli Tutti” seems to repudiate any integralist defense of the Faith from Islam (or secular progressivism) with State coercion, calling us to accept martyrdom submissively like Blessed Charles de Foucauld, and proclaim Christ with love like St. Francis

From (1517 &) 1789 until Vatican II, the Church applied coercion against (proto-)modern errors.

Since then, the Church has made the pastoral judgment to propose, rather than impose, the Good News. https://www.firstthings.com/article/2012/08/conscience-and-coercion
There are reasons to doubt the prudence of submitting to injustice rather than fighting it—I share these doubts.

But Judas had much the same worries in preferring an insurgent warrior king for a messiah to Christ, who would let Himself be crucified.
If integralism—if Catholicism—means anything, it means submission to the Pope. And throughout his papacy, the Holy Father has repudiated integralism itself. So the only thing left for me to do as an integralist is to submit to his repudiation of my views. https://twitter.com/catholicsat/status/1196388035962834944
An “integralist” political response to secular progressive hegemony has debated against the Benedict Option of @roddreher.

The Holy Father tells us today that we are not to try to un-lose the culture war with State power, but to triumph by martyrdom. Roma locuta; causa finita.
This isn’t me saying Integralism in the sense of Gelasian dyarchy is false (it’s not), or that you have to vote as I do, or be as ultramontane as I’m being. But this is how I feel I need to apply this new teaching in my own life, and something I needed to get off my chest.
