You can’t pay a producer for a completely customized, tailor made from scratch beat, then be surprised when it’s not 150% perfect to your specifications, say you don’t want that beat, and expect me to make another one or refund you. Like wtf.
Most beats take 6-7 work hours tops after the final mixdown.
custom beats where I have to follow a bunch of specific instructions, and a reference track or two as well, can sometimes take between 12-15 hrs.
For a BEAT.
Complicated EDM tunes take less time and work than that.
So it’s beyond ridiculous to make a producer do all of that work from SRATCH. Then ask for a refund, or for them to start ALL OVER again when it’s not perfectly what you imagined. SPOILER ALRT:
IT ALMOST NEVER IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU IMAGINED.
I have this friend back home in Alaska. Super talented musician, slays it on the Sax.
But he can never seem get %20 into his solo music productions. Why? Simple. He plans too much.
I’ve found that recreating an idea in your head simply doesn’t work. Ever. It just disappoints you
He’s got this elaborate, gorgeous, multifaceted idea for a massive virtual symphony with an aquatic theme. He’s planned and thought of this since 2011; When I taught him how to produce. Mind you he picked it up fast, and could definitely be as good as me by now. He hasn’t made it
He hasn’t even started. Coz fact of the matter is, he’s tried so hard to make what he heard one very specific way in his head. And that just doesn’t work. It just ends up frustrating him, draining his inspiration, and it adds up into discouraging him from production entirely.
this isn’t an isolated case. It happens to every producer. It’s why I don’t often take on remix suggestions or track ideas. Unless I have a vague, open ended concept for a track to do my own thing off of, then all my music is made with no plan. At random. Off the top of my head.
So anyway, my point is:
If you hire me to produce something very specific, I’ll still give you a really good deal (which I did for the guy I was originally bitching about)
And I’ll do my absolute best. But I can’t read minds man. So when the track inevitably ends up.....
..... not 100% exactly as you envisioned in your head, don’t be surprised and disappointed to the point that you tell me to “start over or do a refund”
Like, I still put in the dozen + hours of work for you. And I can’t get that time back, so why should I sacrifice it for free?
Last tweet for this thread:
It’s not like I half assed the beat that he ended up not using.
It’d a solid beat. I put some serious work in on it. And he even said that he liked it a lot. It just didn’t 100% fit what he requested. And I warned him that it wouldn’t.
