Finally finished the first pass of my submissions. Out of the 290, I flagged 111 for a second review. This second pass will determine who I request material from, and this group will be much, much smaller than the 111. #PitchWars (1/8)
If you've been following my progress, you know I've struggled with passing over people. I'm expecting that feeling to intensify this next go around, since the promise I see is much clearer. (2/8)
In regards to what I hope to ultimately choose, I want to find a story that; 1) fits what I like to read but is unlike anything I've seen before, and 2) is something I know how to help. (3/8)
Regarding the first point, you have a clue of what I like based on my wish list, but you have no comprehensive idea of what I've seen before, so this will be impossible for you to predict. (4/8)
For the second point, this is a mentorship program, and the last thing I want is to give bad advice. I might be able to tell a story needs help, but if I don't know how to give that help, I run the very real risk of fucking up your book. (5/8)
In a lot of cases though, the problem is just that the story starts in the wrong place and I'm not sure where it should start. For those people, I highly recommend they read this thread by Dongwon Song: https://twitter.com/dongwon/status/1258794561201152001 (6/8)
It's going to be much slower going this time around, and I don't anticipate sending out requests for a couple more days. I'll continue to tweet my progress, however. (7/8)
The last thing I want is for people to frantically check their inboxes when there's no reason for them to expect an email from me. In the mean time, I'll be more active with teasers to keep you entertained. (8/8)
