On my way home yesterday, I missed my normal exit and went through town instead. I drove past a yellow car pulling out of Auto Zone with the N-word spraypainted in huge letters on the driver’s side. This is a progressive university town and it is 2020.
All day I thought about the driver in his car and our country. I pushed it away and did menial chores around the house to try to erase that word from my mind, much like the driver probably did to the glaring word now etched on his bright yellow car.
We have now moved past the simplicity of political parties. I say this and admit to being neither a democrat or a republican. This will be my first vote outside of the libertarian or independent ticket. I keep voting Libertarian to try to make a true third party happen.
Maybe, it is like ‘fetch’ and it is not ever going to happen, but this year, I am taking a knee.
I miss being proud of our flag, the uttered decency from a leader and the communal respect of the Golden Rule. This weekend, I rewatched the mockery of Hilary four years ago when she was bone-gutted sick with pneumonia and now thoughts and prayers of a leader are being asked of me.
If you voted for him four years ago, he assumed that his heartless behavior was okay with you and that you both shared this brutal idea of Christian behavior. Sadly, it would win him more votes. I will never understand this.
This country has to do better. We need to lay our political parties aside and vote for decency, respect and humanity. The reason that this election is the most important one to date is that our country is at a crossroads.
Do we pick ourselves up, dust the past four years away and keep grinding to be a kinder & more loving country or do we choose to miss the exit of being civilly humane and continue on the road to erase all of the progress that we have been trying to make over the past sixty years?
