This is the key
Another major aspect is that many people in this situation don’t have a lot going on outside it. If you can maintain a relationship with the person, try to get them involved in a club or activity outside of the toxic interest.
Don’t make it about their obsession or behavior (the point is to STOP focusing on the toxic interest), just invite them to join a club or start hiking with you or something.
Source: never been into Q but have had ruminations and obsessions that weren’t good for me. It is common for ADHD/autistic people to develop what I’m calling “toxic interests” (vs special interests), something to keep in mind during #ADHDAwarenessMonth
Note: things like QAnon and cults are very bad but almost anything can become a toxic interest if it takes up all your time, isolates you from others, or harms your mental or physical health, and that’s a lot of things. #ADHDAwarenessMonth
Or if it becomes difficult to think about anything but the interest, even if you want to. That’s not healthy. (Ps I’m not talking about a special interest that you enjoy and that is harmless or quirky. I have many of those and they are wonderful.)
Common toxic interests don’t just include conspiracies or plots, but fandoms, health, religion and politics. Once again, it it genuinely makes your life better and makes you happy, that’s not what I’m talking about. But if it’s consuming your life, you need to try to move away.
