making a thread on why neurotypicals cant describe their interests as hyperfixation because i am tired of neurotypicals using the word hyperfixation đŸ–€
ok so first of all what is a hyperfixation?
hyperfixation/hyperfocus is an intense and involuntary fixation on an interest in a certain subject/activity neurodivergent people experience that outsiders may see as obsession! (1/10)
what are some examples of hyperfixation?
last year i was hyperfixated on the game sally face. i would play it almost every day and always think about it, when i drew i would only draw those characters and when i wrote i would only write fanfic of the game! (2/10)
currently im hyperfixated on the band mayhem! i listen to their music all the time and search for any information on them i can find. ive watched the film based on them more than 16 times and i know the script almost word for word, theyre pretty much all i think/talk about (3/10)
so now ive shown some examples maybe you start to notice the difference between hyperfixation and normal interest/obsession, if you do thats great! but if you dont im gonna explain now why neurotypicals cannot hyperfixate. (4/10)
so whats the problem? isnt it just a word to describe interests?
well, to put it simply no. nt brains arent able to hyperfix, its a trait found in nd people. our brains are built different so we experience things differently to you, including interests! (5/10)
most neurodivergent people are bullied their whole lives for hyperfixating and called annoying because our interests are ALL we talk and think about. we care deeply about our hyperfix to the point even criticism of it can hurt us emotionally (6/10)
hyperfixation is very different from just being passionate about an interest, there are ugly sides to it too (but dont let this make you think hyperfixation is unhealthy, its actually more unhealthy to repress hyperfixations!!) (7/10)
sometimes hyperfixations can be so intense you refuse to break away from the activity. lets say youre hyperfixating on a really cool show, you may put off eating, sleeping and even going to the bathroom just to consume as much of the show as you can (8/10)
hyperfixation is a beautiful thing :] and so much more than just obsession! it can be an escape for many people too, i personally look at stuff im hyperfixated on to calm down after meltdowns/shutdowns!! (9/10)
if you think you may hyperfixate and relate to other nd symptoms i recommend looking more into adhd/autism and maybe even seeing a professional if you have the ability to :] also feel free to dm me with any questions abt neurodivergency, im happy to answer!! (10/10)
anyway i hope this helped!! feel free to send this thread to neurotypicals if you wanna educate them more on hyperfix without typing huge paragraphs!! also for context im autistic (prof dx) and possibly also adhd
