Every single day someone gets on here and tries to convince us to have chats with people who don't believe we are human and it is so harmful mentally and emotionally. https://twitter.com/AdamTuss/status/1312557121339363334
And for what? To make a racist person a better human via exposure to me? I don't exist so that people can strengthen their moral core through witnessing or participating in my suffering and eventually realizing it is wrong. I need to sacrifice my health and safety for that?
Social media is not a job or chore. It is a place to socialize with people one finds pleasant in order to cope and find communion. It should provide comfort and support. But usually does not due to the trolls and bots and corporations.
I block bigots. I block people who try to force me to interact with bigots. I even block people who just follow bigots so this app doesn't drag their likes of hateful tweets into my feed. The minute I started doing that my experience using social media increased a hundredfold.
What also improved Twitter was following those who are different from me--gender, race, orientation, religion, etc. I get to see beautiful things I never saw before. But I didn't go seeking them out to improve myself. I followed those people because we had storytelling in common.
I followed people I agreed with on things monumentally important to me (art and morality) and then delighted in all the gorgeous but superficial differences I discovered later (food, slang, fashion, beauty, etc.).
THAT'S how you make the most of this app if you are here to comfort and improve yourself and others.
