Quick thread on this, I wanted to highlight a handful of unspectacular but vital things Brisbane did in that 10-12 minute period during the second quarter where they were under the pump, but managed to hold Richmond off (1/7) https://twitter.com/rickm18/status/1311995216883183616
Here once Richmond win possession, they normally get straight out the front of the contest. But in an instant Brisbane cover off all potential exits to win the ball back, use Neale as the sweeper and get it downfield (2/7)
This is as unspectacular as it comes, but most players in Neale’s position here get sucked towards the tackle. Neale doesn’t and holds back in a defensive position. When the handball flings back he can gather and absorb the tackle so Brisbane can reset (3/7)
The first of multiple Berry appearances. His push up forces Baker to go to Edwards instead of forward, and off screen Coleman – the fifth gamer – realises it’s his responsibility to stop Bolton otherwise Richmond's away. Great tackle and Brisbane can again reset (4/7)
Now a two-parter, both involving Berry. From this long ball into Richmond’s 50, he holds his shape on the outside, giving Ah Chee a relatively simple release handball. Berry’s clearing kick goes out on the full, but… (5/7)
Seconds later, there’s another Richmond entry and again Berry’s in the right spot providing an option. A lot of players second guess here after what just happened, but Berry knows he’s doing the right thing, so adjusts the kick slightly and this time finds Hipwood (6/7)
To finish, as Brisbane are working back into general play Richmond look like they’re about to transition here. But the Lions block off all the exits so quickly. It happened all night, but it was this second quarter period to hold Richmond up which proved most crucial. (7/7)
