There are different kinds of sex work

1. There are the ones that stand on the road

2. The ones that have 9 to 5 Jobs that use sex work to beef up their earnings, these are the ones that get called up via referrals

3. The ones that work as strippers
4. The ones that don't have 9 to 5 gigs.
But don't stand on the road

These ones are always available for sex work 247 as long as you can pay their money
5. The ones who use social media, twitter, IG, Tinder and the likes
6. The curious ones who do sex work out of peer pressure
Now the going rate for most people who do sex work is based on your conditions of work

The least paid are the ones who stand on the road.

For a woman to stand on the road with all the inherent risks involved and the shitty pay
Its because its the only way she can survive. She has tried everything else and nothing seems to work.

These sex workers have no education beyond, primary or secondary school

So the jobs available to them are low skilled that pay next to nothing.
Low skill jobs pay btwn 15 and 30k monthly..

How is she going to survive on that and take care of the responsibilities on her head.

I used to think that they were lazy and greedy. Until I knew better
In my early days on radio I used to work overnights on weekends.

And I was living in Ikoyi back then so my route to work from Osborne was to either use sura market and link obalende or to use that dolphin bridge to link Alfred Rewane
If I use obalende I'd drive past dodan barracks and the sex workers on that road scared me.

They will bang your car, call you customer and all sorts.

Was the first time seeing a huge cluster of sex workers other than when they used to be at Kuramo beach when I was a kid
I got curious. My show used to start at 1 am. So I'd walk down sometimes to buy suya around that eleshin side.

And it was full blown sodom and gomorrah.

Then one sex worker recognised me. And said.

Osi swaveyyyyyy you sef dey come here. I just dropped my suya and ran
The next time I saw her. Was at the BRT car park on keffi Street. There were women who sold local alcohol in sachets and all sorts.

And she laughed when she saw me again. Apparently she listens to radio. And had seen me on TV.. and we became friends...
So I would run into her once a month or thereabout and we would just gist. And the horrors.

She had 6 siblings. DIABETIC FATHER nd a mother that sold alcohol in sachets in ibadan

She had tried everything when she came to lagos.

From house help to sales girl..
To cleaner

And nothing paid more than 20k. And what pushed her to sex work was when they called her from home that her dad needed money for amputation from a diabetic sore that refused to heal.
I learnt Bout how they pay monthly for where she stays

How she always insists on condoms. And how she wanted to leave because of the juju alot of babes were using to retain customers.
So randomly she would text me and say she caught my show and one day I played am I wrong by Nico and Vinz on radio.

And she texted to say the song is actually telling her story
One time I was on leave and I gathered all I had saved to travel that summer..

Came to about 300k and it was alot of money in 2013

Gave her the money and I dont think I had seen anyone break down like she did that day.

She currently lives around Abule Egba
And sells used clothes in a market she calls super

Haven't heard from her in a while but im sure she is doing OK.

When I say women have exhausted all options before they will stand on the road.

I actually know what I'm talking about.
Its always easy to Judge sex workers and call them lazy

But what makes you the customer better than them ?.

Before you judge anyone. At least try to understand why they do what they do
