What #DalitLivesMatter is: a thread because I think this should be an international concern.
To start, A HUGE TW !! If you're an empath, I highly suggest and BEG that you DO NOT continue reading. I do not mean to attack or offend any religion or person with this thread, it is purely informational.

TW // rape , murder , discrimination , death , casteism + more
*THIS IS A VERY SENSITIVE DISCUSSION !!*

If you are going to disregard or invalidate Dalit struggles, I will be blocking you. This is not a matter of religion, this is a matter of human rights and HUMAN LIVES.
Firstly, let's breakdown what the term "Dalit" is and where it comes from. The term "Dalit" is used to refer to people who are on the lower end of the "caste system", the world's longest-living social hierchy. Dalit people are an oppressed minority and +
+ the roots of Dalit oppression goes way back to the origins of +
the caste system in Hindu religion. These people are also commonly referred to as "untouchables" and have been outcasted for centuries. Many Dalit people changed their last names (an indication of what caste they belonged to) or converted to different religions to escape from +
the atrocities they faced as Dalits. Although "untouchability" was abolished in law after independence, people's behaviour towards Dalit people never changed. A prime example of this would be the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami in Tamil Nadu where over 10,000 died and 650,00 were +
misplaced. https://minorityrights.org/minorities/dalits/ explains the situation better than I can.
They were denied WATER because of what they were born as? Something they can't change? Something a lot of nationalists and people bring in when on the topic of casteism is reservation and how if Dalit people want the caste system abolished, they should start with getting rid of +
reservation. RESERVATION IS WHAT ALLOWS DALIT PEOPLE TO BE EDUCATED THE SAME AS ANYONE ELSE. What people don't realize is that caste and poverty are inseparably joined together in India and while there are laws against caste-based discrimination, IT STILL HAPPENS.
India as a whole does not have access to education, but Dalit people are discriminated against even when they reach the point at which they can go to school. Many Dalit people attempted to escape India as a whole to be freed from casteism, only to find their identity would +
"Why is #DalitLivesMatter trending NOW?"
TW // rape , death !!

#DalitLivesMatter is trending now because of #JusticeForHathrasVictim and #JusticeForManishaValmiki . Manisha Valmiki was a 19-year-old Dalit who was raped by four upper-caste men, was abused, and later died at the hospital.
