Most people wear a mask not because of a sense of civic duty or because it protects them but because they are afraid of standing out from the crowd, of being the odd one out. Masks represent a moral shaming code embedded in the people by the government- morality policing

And just to qualify, me not wearing a mask is not some ego-massaging anarchic moment. It is precisely because I do care deeply about others and their freedom of choice that I don’t. I don’t wear my mask because I believe in a fiat system of compliance not a mandatory one.
