One year ago, Maria Moore showed up at my house at about 10PM after flying from the ERLC conf on abuse to drive to my house and check on me because the gravity of the damage of the EC’s actions to my health & willingness to live became clear to many as we all gathered in Dallas.
I was stunned as I opened my front door and saw Maria, who I had known and loved for nearly twenty years, on my doorstep. Her husband was still in the middle of leading a very complicated conference in Dallas and she was on my doorstep because she knew I wanted to kill myself.
For 7 months I had deteriorated as I privately begged @ronniefloyd and the @SBCExecComm to please correct their lies about me so the harassment could stop and I could try to recover and preserve my career—nearly all I had left. I was stunned when Maria arrived. It didn’t (cont)
reflect a change in the EC posture, but it reflected that a woman I have loved and respected for years saw what was happening and went out of her way to make sure I knew she cared—And her husband did, too. Then later that night @R_Denhollander texted that she was preparing (cont)
for her session closing the conference the following day. She knew the facts of my case & that the EC had lied. She asked if I would be comfortable with her bringing that to light the following day. I was exhausted, @ronniefloyd had shut down my attempts to get resolution (cont)
by telling me two months prior that as CEO of the EC he stood by BP’s actions. Period. I was losing consciousness at random times, had lost 50lbs in abt 6wks and had no hope of making it to the end of the year. I told Rachael that I trusted her & to tell anything she (cont)
thought would be helpful for the church’s broader understanding. The next morning—a year ago tomorrow—as the first substantive question in the interview, @drmoore asked Rachael why survivors don’t always tell. Rachael, very appropriately, pointed out what happened to me (cont)
as a prime example of why many don’t tell. And with her advocacy and assertions in that 2-3 minutes, 7 mos of steady harassment was finally interrupted with the first wave of public support (granted, it also brought out more hate). The response included, @Jonathan_Howe (cont)
acting of his own conviction after hearing Rachael & pulling what documentation was readily available at BP (where he was brand newly in charge), issued the first official SBC partial correction of the lies the SBC created about me. Rachael confronting, Dr. Moore providing (cont)
the context where it was possible, and Jonathan going out on a limb to draw a line of truth in the sand that made it clear that things were not as had been reported—within hours of Maria showing up on my doorstep to plead with me to live—and while @megannlively kept people (cont)
from absolutely bombarding me. The truth is that the days and weeks that followed became the darkest as the truth being exposed ended up truly costing me everything. But that was inevitable anyway because of what BP had done & @ronniefloyd had refused to do. So what I try (cont)
to hold onto is that when the storm walls were swelling the highest, precious brave friends showed up for me in so many different ways in one of the most significant 18 hr periods of my life. I’m thankful for precious Maria, @R_Denhollander, @megannlively, and @Jonathan_Howe.
