Although most “fests” in Ithaca have been canceled this year, Second Wind Cottage’s second annual Lantern Festival happened earlier this evening. Stay tuned for a story from me for @IthacaWeek! In the meantime, a behind-the-scenes look:
Carmen Guidi, founder and director of Second Wind — a local non-profit that supports individuals who are homeless — said the main goal of the event is to raise awareness. Proceeds from the tickets/lanterns will go toward Second Wind’s operating expenses, including a women’s home.
A beautiful (and chilly!) night, featuring music from local band Leo and the Maydays. Approx. 20 attendees all following safety precautions. Lanterns with the names of lost loved ones will be floating here after sunset. Many people were kind enough to share their stories with me.
One of the lanterns that stood out to me. They’re beautiful even before they’re lit up and sent down the inlet.
A brief excerpt of James Breslin’s speech. “Ithaca has the problems of a larger city, but we’re small enough to sit around the table and talk about the size and the scope of the problem,” he said. One of the great characteristics of Ithaca’s community.
A beautiful ending to the night. Don’t worry, there were volunteers on paddle boards who made sure all of the lanterns made it back to shore.
That’s all for now! Make sure you check out @IthacaWeek for the full story soon.
