Trauma changes how your brain operates!

(Thread)
The prefrontal cortex is a section of the brain that allows us to observe your surroundings, predict what might happen next, make conscious decision & control our impulses

/1
The amygdala is a set of neurons in the brain that's responsible for detecting danger. Experiencing trauma increases the risk of the amygdala misreading whether danger is present or not.

/2
When people who've been traumatized are triggered, the amygdala jumps to conclusions, assuming danger is present. Triggering the fight-or-flight response & the prefrontal cortex doesn't have an opportunity to access the situation.

/3
One way we can activate & strengthen the prefrontal cortex and therefore decrease activity in the amygdala is by practicing 'Mindfulness'. Mindfulness brings awareness to our feelings, physical sensations & behaviours in the present moment.

/4
By practicing it can help us break out of negative thought pattern. Mediation is probably the most popular way people practice mindfulness but you could incorporate mindfulness into any daily activity. For example: when you brush your teeth; you feel minty

/5
When you take shower you feel warm water as it hits your skin. Smell of the shampoo...etc.

There are several opportunities each day to practice mindfulness - all it takes is tuning into your senses & focusing ypur attention on the activity you're engaged in.

May Allah heal those who are suffering. Ameen ♥️
