Okay clearly I need to do a thread about the wonder that is Scarecrow and Mrs. King for those of you too young to have watched it (it aired from 83 to I think 87). This show literally was a bunch of fanfic tropes turned into a spy caper show starring THESE BITCHES RIGHT HERE. 1/
Bruce Boxleitner from "Tron" (although some of you may know him from Bab 5) and ex-Charlie's Angel Kate Jackson. He's Scarecrow (codename, natch) a super secret super spy working out of a Georgetown townhouse. His real name is Lee Stetson (no, really). 2/
She's Amanda King, a divorced mom of two preteen boys whose own mother (the delightful Beverly Garland) lives with her, enabling her to frequently disappear on spy capers. How does a housewife get into the spy-caper business? I'LL TELL YOU. 3/
Lee has to give a package to a man in a red hat on a train but they ALL have red hats, so about to be caught, he randomly hands the package to Amanda, who is there with her coat over a nightgown dropping off her never-seen boyfriend Dean at the station. Then he vanishes. 4/
So she's got this mystery package in her house, doesn't know what to do, and Lee tracks her down and is like, thanks for holding this, bye now. Of course she gets Mixed Up in Things and by the way, hey Spy Dude is kind of a snack. 5/
Through a series of plot contrivances, she ends up participating in his spy adventures week after week, her Mad Housewife Skills actually coming in handy, until finally she just becomes his spy buddy helper. Wacky hijinks ensue. 6/
Naturally the Will They or Won't They tension starts up almost immediately, but this show ain't being all Edgelord about this and makes no secret that eventually, of course they will. Duh. That's like, the point of the show. 7/
It's corny as hell but weirdly, kind of holds up in its early 80s innocence. In the second season the show got a bigger budget and they did a whole bunch of episodes set in various European cities where they actually shot on location, it's pretty nifty. 8/
The progression of the relationship is kind of sweet, too. Lee is sometimes exasperated with Amanda, but he comes to respect her intelligence and resourcefulness. They both have other relationships (her ex reappears at one point), but develop a real friendship. 9/
They make it through some misunderstandings and near-death experiences and a truly awful mistake of a haircut on Jackson's part, but by the third season it's made clear that they've fallen for each other and it goes from there. 10/
The show might have gone on longer, but Jackson became ill with breast cancer during the shooting of the 4th season. In fact she barely appears in the second half of that season. But it's still a satisfying run of TV. You may be rolling your eyes at the cheese, but it's fun. 11/
The show is available on YT and Prime - not for free streaming, sadly, but for purchase - and there are also DVDs but not of the entire show, I don't think. You could do worse for nostalgia TV. 12/12
