Here's the Hanafi position on music in a nutshell according to me:

There are two things we need to deal with here. First we just need to look at the fiqh perspective.
According to the fiqh perspective, the origin of the sound matters. Therefore:

(A thread)
- Nasheeds with instruments: Impermissible
- Vocals only Nasheeds: Permissible
- Nasheeds with vocals that mimic instruments: permissible
- Nasheeds with Duff: Some scholars say these are always permissible, while others say these should only be allowed at times of ceremony.
- Nasheeds with beatboxing: impermissible. (Because the clicks in the beatboxing are ultimately not a vocal, and can be classified as percussion).
- Nasheeds that copy the tune of popular music: Makruh
Then we come to the question: “Does the creation of Nasheeds that mimic instrument harm the audience or benefit them?” And honestly, this last debate can go both ways. There are both sides to the argument. Many people need an alternative and these provide great ones.
On the other hand, many people, including myself, only started listening to Music once we were exposed to Nasheeds. As Khalid Baig says, “It is not a one-way highway.”
I would highly recommend Khalid Baig’s book Slippery Stone for anyone wanting to learn about Islam’s stance on music. Changed my life. It is definitely a masterpiece.
