I'm trying to be more visible and vocal in my support for #BlackLivesMatter , #SayHerName, and related social justice efforts on #SHSU campus, in my community, and online. Of course, vocal support is not enough--it must be combined with actual action. I know this. 1/
But, I'm also recognizing how important it is for faculty, staff, & admin to visibly support the movement in the classroom, online, on campus, & in the community. Our students need to see that we stand w/them & behind them in the fight for racial justice. 2/
For my campus community specifically. I think showing visible support is crucial. SHSU is situated in a rural prison town & a confederate statue sits on the grounds of the Walker County Courthouse. Huntsville is tr*mp country. I hear many stories of racist encounters. 3/
Black students tell me its hard 2 live in Huntsville. They tell me they don't feel like they have faculty/admin support. They experience 2 campus cultures: the SHSU advertised in promotional materials & Black Sam, the community Black students have created for themselves. 4/
If we want to change the campus and community culture, we must be deliberate in our actions, and visible and vocal in our support. I encourage my colleagues to be vocal and consistent in their support of #BlackLivesMatter #SayHerName and other important social movements. 5/
At the very least, we owe our students visible and vocal support. If we're not explicit & visible in our support, then how will they know we are on their side? 6/
I recall the professors who made the biggest impact on me when I was a student. They were the scholars and educators who were unapologetic in their support for social progress. 7/
TWO #Blacklivesmatter on-campus demonstrations planned! Mark ur calendars & show up. Visible support from students/faculty/staff is crucial if we want 2 change the campus culture. Let's show #SHSU that BLACK LIVES MATTER. 8/
Check out @FlagsForGood. I ordered this custom flag for my #SHSU office. For every flag sold, they donate to a relevant activist org. If you are a faculty/staff who would like to visible show ur support, DM me and I'll give you a flag for your office. 9/
I have four flags to give away to faculty and staff. First DM, first serve. All I ask is that you hang it in your personal campus space (e.g., office) where students and campus community members can see it. #BlackLivesMatter #SAYHERNAME #NoJusticeNoPeace 10/10
