I actually think this thread sums up why people do things like this. A lot of our tradition had many of the ritual aspects taken away for safety, secrecy, etc. That lack of formal ritual leads people to downplay many of our traditions https://twitter.com/samarimccloud/status/1312527322449244160
Even though we know Black folks KEEP photos of their ancestors, say things like “xyz is still with you” “such and such is watching over you” etc, it’s devalued to us because it doesn’t match what we see as “real” celebration or “real” ritual
