The archeology part of the update seems to have been met with slightly less enthusiasm than some of the other #MinecraftLive updates and I have an idea about it that I wanted to share.
While it feels like a feature that could be better suited for Education Edition which has exclusive chemistry blocks, I believe the archeology update belongs in the main edition of Minecraft . . . if they move it to the mesa biome.
This would link the archeology camps to a specific biome (like igloos to ice plains). And artifacts could be uncovered in red sand, which unlike gravel, currently has nothing drop from it.
The problem, in my opinion, with using gravel is that it's found in almost every biome (and the nether!), but red sand is only in the mesa, thus making artifacts more rare.

Imagine excavating a mesa!
It's also just more true to life in terms of where archeological digs take place. Hopefully the amazing team working on this is already thinking along these lines. I also think it's important to remember that the textures they shared in the video weren't final.
No matter what, it's going to be awesome and as someone who was thiiiiiis close to choosing a geology/archaeology/paleontology major, I'm really excited. And I hope someday we get answers to what creatures the fossils in the game were . . . maybe a time machine for your world?!
Lastly, I just want to say that I think the entire Mojang team knocked this update out of the park. I feel so energized and appreciative and warm (like Christmas morning) after watching today's stream. I love this game and community so much. ⛏️🥰
