This statement from the president, released through Rudy Giuliani to the New York Post, is a fundamental misunderstanding of the coronavirus threat https://nypost.com/2020/10/03/trump-tells-rudy-giuliani-im-going-to-beat-covid-19/
First off, the president has not been confronting it responsibly. He’s packing supporters into rallies where there’s no distancing and little masks. He’s dragging staff around the country with him, increasing their exposure.
But more specifically, you don’t “confront” the virus. There’s no glory in acting tough or claiming you’re stronger than it. You can’t charge at it across the battlefield.
Beating the virus requires actions that, in another context, might appear cowardly. Essentially, you hide from it. In this case, boldness can be reckless.
You can’t “take one for the team” by getting the virus. It’s not like jumping on a grenade to protect your buddies. It’s more like jumping on a grenade, sticking it in your pocket and bringing it home to your family.
