My generation’s obsession with having established careers before 25 has led to everyone being hyper competitive, opportunistic, self-centered and deeply insecure. I wish everyone would just relax a little bit.
It’s fine to experiment/ take on projects to learn about yourself. But everyone has such terrible interpersonal skills these days. Any relationship that doesn’t seem “productive” or perfect is seen as “toxic.” People put in work to build corporations but can’t keep best friends.
It’s also very telling that for everyone in our generation to be so entrepreneurial, so few people are working toward their dreams TOGETHER. Everyone needs to build on their own, everyone starting the same company 25 times instead of coming together. So much ego.
Please just know that the work habits our generation has adopted are unhealthy and parallel that of middle aged white men on Wall Street. Family matters. Your relationships matter. Reassess your priorities and don’t commit to long term business endeavors before you’re ready.
Lastly, you can start a project with the sole purpose of growing and learning. The urge to monetize and build everything to be as large and visible as it can be is a DISEASE. Learn to say “I discovered what I needed to. This is enough.” — it will make moving through life so easy.
I grew up poor and homeless and I still have enough political and spiritual conviction to not let capitalism corrupt my values and relationships to the extent it does many of you. The effects of capitalism are global, the American millennial/Gen Z work culture is not. https://twitter.com/treasurefbrooks/status/1312962027690881024
