Korean professional vocal couch analyzed Wheein's vocal technique.
I like this vid so much that I'd like to share some parts with you.

@RBW_MAMAMOO

If I compare Mamamoo members to movie directors, Moonbyul is like George Clooney. She knows exactly what her strengths are. Hwasa is Ridley Scott. She goes her own way, but the gp loves her enthusiastically.
Solar, like Tim Burton, is hiding madness behind humor. Wheein? She is Steven Spielberg. She's good at all genres.

(Few videos of Wheein singing live)

Wheein's biggest weapon is that she can pull off all genres as if she owns them. You watched those live perf, right?
Starting with Mamamoo's own style, ballad, rock, R&B and so on... When I first saw her, she was so colorful, She switched her style so much so I thought, 'Is she still trying to figure out her own color?' but after I watched 20-30 vids of her live perf,
I could see her her own style of techniques that varies from genre to genre.
The key technique is control of nasal sounds.

(Explaining about nasal sounds; In short, the degree of contraction of palatoglossus muscle determines whether the sound goes out of the mouth or the nose)
That ratio can be controlled by the singer through training. And that's what Wheein is good at.

You really should watch this vid. It's the vid that Wheein covered 'lay it down' on the radio. You can cleary see what I mean if you watch it.
She accentuates the song by controlling the nasal sound. Through this, her R&B sounds much more softly than the other R&B accentuated only with breathing.

If she hadn't used her tongue, the song would have been very dull.

She also sing classic Ballad. Watch this (Good bye)
In the song, she uses a voice that is close to her own voice, which does not use much nasal voice.

It is a song that Wheein uses the voice that is closest to her own voice among the songs she has been released. Comfortable tone. But she doesn't keep using the same tone.
She uses a completely different voice in the chorus. She expresses the song emotionally in a way that gradually increases the ratio of nasal sounds throughout the entire song.
This means that she understands how to use the nasal sound very well and she uses it exactly where/when it should be used.

But if this is all she's good at, I wouldn't call her a genius.

If the song require sharp sounds, Rock for example, She doesn't use any nasal sounds.
If you sing like this, instead of lowering the vocal range, you will be able to pronounce well, make a refreshing feeling, and very powerful sound.

Pop? I don't even need to talk about Pop. She's Mamamoo.
I think the soccer position where the best player should do is midfielder, becos their role is connecting DF and FW.
They have to understand the whole game, be smart and have good personality. Especially personality.

But unfortunately it's hard for them to get much attention.
I think Wheein's role is like midfielder. She adjusts(harmonize) Solar, Moonbyul, Hwasa's voice.

She plays her parts very well, but also if the song is lack of sth, she fills in.
In conclusion, Mamamoo is a team of three strikers and one midfielder.

Where's the defender?

Mmamoo doesn't have such thing.
