This may be the clearest example I've seen of the fundamental crisis we face as a country.

Trump is an incompetent huckster, but he's successfully drawn attention to something many of us had either forgotten or never knew.

There's no one that can MAKE us do anything. Government exists and operates because we all agree it should.

If the majority of us decide that rules just shouldn't apply to us anymore...then the rules don't apply. That's it. There's no one who can make them apply. There's no one who can make it so the Trump administration is suddenly competent and trustworthy.

When we choose a leader this bad, and then let that leader behave this way, there is no one who can fix it but us. It's us. It's just us.

There are no grownups. There is no one who has the right answers who can fix it for us. There is only us who can fix it for us.

Societies and governments aren't buildings. This isn't infrastructure and the things that hold our society up won't stay standing while we concentrate on other things. This isn't a road we can repave when it finally gets too worn to drive on.

Societies and governments are ideas. They only work when we all decide they should work, and they only continue through the daily maintenance of an informed citizenry who have the will to keep the ideas going. It's not easy. It's never been easy. But that's why it must be done.

Societies and governments exist because we know that life is just a little bit easier when everyone works cooperatively to take care of one another. So, in the best interests of all, we choose to will our governments into existence.

But if we look away, if we get distracted our individual existence or the petty squabbles of tribes, if we stop tending to those ideas then our government will fail.

We prevent that with our effort. No one will save us. It's just us.
