There are two major "soft skills" that signal you will be a valuable political asset:
- denouncing or turning on "friends" as takewinds shift (it's just business)
- having a willingness to repeat the company line while harboring private views; recognizing this isn't hypocritical
I used to think political skills were things like declamation, rhetoric, speechwriting, but those are just minor "value adds." Showing a willingness to network, apologize or sacrifice oneself when needed, sacrifice acquaintances or former positions when needed...that's it, chief
This is a real skillset, by the way. It's essential if you're not particularly bright, bold, or innovative...there's still gold in them thar hills for those who can Play the Game and Do the Work
For example, good politics can involve a) denouncing the secret police while b) taking no practical steps to weaken them and perhaps even c) being on their payroll as a kind of NJ Generals-esque controlled opposition
