History of the Wizarding World

The wizarding world is the magical community where the wizards and witches live and interact. They are separated from the muggles (non-magic)

The two communities are separated by protective charms, spells and absolute secrecy

Each country has a different “wizarding government”

Magic is learned and practiced through studying, training and formal schooling. There are a lot of magical schools aeround the globe but for now, we’ll focus on Hogwarts.

This kind of magic is peculiar and complicated that a Muggle cannot “simply learn it”.

MINISTRY OF MAGIC

- the primary governing body of the magical community in many countries. These are led by the Minister of Magic.

MINISTER FOR MAGIC

is the one elected to lead Ministry. The people who vote and the duration of term are not fixed/determined.

INTERNATIONAL STATUE OF WIZARDING SECRECY

- creates the laws implemented by the Ministry of Magic and International Confederation of Wizards.

The Ministry is not affliated to any part of the Muggle government, but is obliged to inform the Prime Minister of events that could cause Muggle notice, such as escaped criminals or the importation of highly dangerous magical creatures.

Everything is done by magic. Science is basically neglected. Dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and other domestic objects are not needed because you can always use your wand to do the chores :3

We do have radios, though. Wizards are amused by Muggle technology and often keep them (to alter and bewitch them).

Many wizarding families keep toilets, radios, televisions, cars, motorbikes and more.

RELIGION

- Wizards practice all manner of faiths and religions. Christmas and Easter are celebrated, though the celebrations mainly cover the non-religious portions of the holidays. They can be members of any faith, and there is no mention of specific wizarding religions.

EDUCATION

- there are many Wizarding schools around the world but we will focus on Hogwarts, the most famous one to us.

HOGWARTS, SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY

Hogwarts accepts students that are aged 11, all residing in Ireland, Great Britain or Scotland. The castle is found in Scottish fields and will appear abandoned to Muggles.

MODES OF TRANSPORTATION

Apparation - teleportation

Floo Network - traveling via fireplace

Flying - by the use of broomsticks, thestrals (winged horse creature), flying carpets/cars/motorcycle

Phoenix - teleportation-ish

Portkey - touching an item that will bring you to a specific place

Vanishing Cabinet - transporting from one cabinet to another.

Toilet Network - used in the Ministry of Magic. You flush yourself down.. quite literally.

MODES OF COMMUNICATION

Enchanted Coins

Floo Network - fireplace communication.

Interdepartmental memos - magically enchanted paper airplanes that fly to their destination. Used by the Ministry.

Owls - used to send a package/letter to another wizard/witch.

Patronus Charm

Portraits - photographs and portraits in the wizarding world MOVES. Photographs act like GIFs while Portraits possess a form of enchanted intelligence that allows wizards/witches to communicate with humans and each other, to move locations and to pass along messages and advices.

THE TWO DARKEST WIZARDS OF ALL TIME: GELLERT GRINDELWALD AND TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE (VOLDEMORT)

Gellert Grindelwald (c. 1883 – March 1998) was a wizard who is considered to be the second most powerful and dangerous Dark Wizards of all time, after Voldemort. A student at Durmstrang Institute, Grindelwald was expelled for dark experiments and near-fatal attacks on students.

With violent acts in both the United States and Europe, Grindelwald ultimately established a power base at Nurmengard Castle in Austria. In 1945, his former lover and friend, Albus Dumbledore confronted and defeated him in a legendary duel.

He was imprisoned in his own fortress for decades and was slain there by Lord Voldemort in 1998 when he refused to give up the location of the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand of all time.

Tom Marvolo Riddle (31 December 1926 – 2 May 1998), later known as Lord Voldemort or, You-Know-Who, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Dark Lord, was an English half-blood wizard considered to have been the most powerful and dangerous Dark Wizard of all time.

He was amongst the greatest wizards to have ever lived, often considered to be the second most powerful wizard in history, his only superior being Albus Dumbledore.

He was made under the effects of Amortentia, a love potion. Thus, he is unable to feel love.

His hatred for muggles began when his father abandoned his new family on the streets of London when the potion's influence was lifted. His mother died moments after giving birth to and naming him after his father (Tom Riddle) and maternal grandfather, Marvolo Gaunt.

He grew up in a Muggle orphanage and began attending Hogwarts in 1938 and was sorted into Slytherin house.

He is the heir of Slytherin and was able to open the Chamber of Secrets and use the basilisk to attack (and kill) Muggle-born students. Because he is the heir of Salazar Slytherin, he has the ability to speak Parseltongue (speak to snakes).

He is truly a wise and powerful wizard, having created eight horcruxes (associated with immortality).

Making a horcrux requires high level of magic. You literally rip your soul and place it in an object, to keep yourself immortal.

He became the self-proclaimed Lord Voldemort, which was his birthname with the letters re-arranged. He commanded an army of wizards and Dark creatures, committed numerous murders personally and through his followers, and succeeded in taking over the Ministry of Magic.

Few years before the First Wizarding War, he started gathering followers in witches and wizards who called themselves Death Eaters. Some were supportive of killing Muggles and Muggle-borns; others were greedy for power, wealth and fame; while others joined the out of fear.

Voldemort could read and control minds of others. He could almost always tell when he was being lied to. According to Severus Snape, Voldemort often enjoyed telepathically invading the minds of others, creating visions designed to torture them into madness. The he would kill them

10 years into the first war, a prophecy was given by Sybill Trelawney, which predicted the fall Voldemort. This prophecy was overheard by Death Eater, Severus Snape. He only heard half of the prophecy and told Voldemort, not knowing he missed an important part of the message.

The prophecy referred to two babies — Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom, as both children were born at the end of July. Voldemort chose to target Harry instead of Neville.

On October 31, 1981, he attacked the Potters in their home in Godric’s Hollow. He succeeded in murdering James and Lily Potter, the parents of Harry.

When it came to Harry however, the killing curse rebounded and hit Voldemort instead. Harry was saved by his mother, Lily’s love.

In 1991 when Harry came to Hogwarts, weak and bodiless Voldemort resided in the back of Professor Quirrel’s head (literally) and tried to steal the Philosopher’s stone (stone of immortality and producer of the elixir of life)

Harry Potter was able to stop them and kill Quirrel.

In 1992, the Chamber of Secrets was re-opened by Ginny Weasley, who was brainwashed by Voldemort’s diary. Tom Marvolo Riddle (the memory from the diary) tried to convince her to kill the muggleborns by unleashing the basilisk again.

12 year old Harry Potter was able to stop him and destroy the diary, which was also a horcrux. He managed to destroy a piece of Voldemort’s soul with a basilisk’s fang (the venom helped in destroying the diary).

In 1994, during the Triwizard tournament, Voldemort came back with his new body and army of followers. He killed Cedric Diggory, a Hufflepuff champion, and was going to go after Harry who managed to escape via Portkey.

From 1995-1998, he gained more followers and power. He managed to cause terror in the Wizarding and Muggle world.

It was on May 2, 1998 when Harry Potter finally defeated Voldemort with a rebounding killing curse.
