Last night, about 200 people went to the Multnomah County Sherrif's Office to protest

Aside from one water bottle and a toy smoke bomb thrown at the cops early in the evening--maybe 10:00--the event was completely peaceful

And police ran over protesters with a motorcycle
After the two thrown projectjles, things mellowed dramatically. Protesters started an impromptu concert. The focus turned to the musicians rather than the building

The crowd started thinning

I can usually tell when protests are winding down. I left at 11:40
When I got home I was, for some reason, very surprised to find that the police had come out to assault the completely peaceful protest
The motorcycle cop attempted to ticket vehicles stationed at each end of the block to prevent vehicle attacks by the far right (a depressingly common kind of attack)

These cars had done this for hours,
and were moving to let cars through when needed. https://twitter.com/alankesslr/status/1312314454952951809?s=19
When protesters surrounded the motorcycle in outrage, the cop ran over a (Black) protester with his motorcycle and severely injured another (Afroindigenous) protester

This is not an approved method of crowd control https://twitter.com/baaascom/status/1312293492702371842?s=19
One of the activists seized and ended up in the hospital with a TBI

TBIs can effect sufferers for the rest of their lives. They increase the likelihood of all sorts of physical and mental issues

They are forever https://twitter.com/Bearcubluv/status/1312311196876333056?s=19
There won't be any New York Times articles about this. Even local coverage will be real small

But I'll keep getting emails from family and friends about how violent the protests are, how "the message is being lost"

Lost by who? It's not lost to us. Who's losing it?
The message isn't lost on those experiencing or witnessing the violence

It's lost on reporters who have every interest in maintaining the status quo, who literally get to choose what the message is, and CHOOSE to tilt at "white outsiders" https://twitter.com/MacSmiff/status/1312400282408554497?s=19
In reporters' defense, the message about losing the message sells. Readers don't want to think too hard about the brutality that underpins our society. They'd much rather pretend the policing system mostly works despite stacks of bloody evidence to the contrary
Every day it becomes harder for me to have any empathy at all for the people who, with their silence and their hand-wringing, give permission for these things to happen
