AN ARGUMENT FOR DISMANTLING THE CURRENT FED POLICE AND REPLACE WITH STATE POLICE.

The state police system has its own issues and it's by no means perfect but I still think it is better than what we currently have for 2 main reasons.

1. The NPF is too large.
The NPF is too large to be accountable to anyone including itself.
A female police officer wrote a letter of complaint about sexual harassment by her superior addressed to the relevant officers at force HQ.
An ASP who was a coursemate of her superior found & buried the letter.
My Uncle filled for transfer 3 days after being assigned to a station in Lagos because he could not stop his colleagues from arresting random people at 5am & demanding 10k before they are released.
He asked "why are we arresting these people" they replied, "That's how we do here"
Police officers who do not "play ball" can spend many years in the same rank and watch their subordinates get promoted over them. The current system rewards bad behavior.
Not even police officers can get justice in the current NPF. Many actually fear for their life.
The NPF needs to be broken up into smaller, manageable units.
Not even the end of SARS will change anything. It's still the same officers in the same system.
2. Fighting at the State level VS fighting at the Federal level.

The Federal executives are too far from the people to be impacted by the kind of protest we are currently doing.

A popular uprising in a state will rattle the Governor politically & may cause him/her to act faster
Police on the state level will be "purpose-built". The security challenges we face vary from state to state.
The "one size fits all" of the currently NPF is obviously not working.
We need forces that can specialize in tackling the unique security challenges their state faces.
In the current NPF, when an officer misbehaves, he or she is often transferred to a new state without any penalty.

In a state police system, you are either a "careful officer" or a former officer.
No transfer to anywhere.
The Federal government can still provide oversight using the NSA as the new Federal Police & checkmate the excesses of the State police but unless police accountability is brought closer to the people we can expect little to no change.
There is just too much power at the center.
