1/ This simple strategy helped a track and field star win nine Olympic gold medals - making him only one of four athletes to have won that many golds.

How'd he do it?

The 85% Rule. 🧵⬇
2/ Carl Lewis, a legendary track and field star won 9 Olympic Gold Medals in the 1984 & 1988 Olympic games.

The unique thing, though, is that Lewis would usually be in last place after the first 40 meters.

How did he get from last to first with only 60-meters left?
3/ A sprint coach was studying Lewis for a year and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't understand how it happened.

But then something clicked.
4/ Instead of trying to figure out what he wasn't doing, the coach tried to examine what he was doing - how did he kick it into 2nd gear halfway through?

Still, nothing.

His breathing, his form, his stride - everything was the same, from the 10-meter mark to the 90-meter mark.
5/ "Ah! This was the breakthrough. This is how he did it!"

While everyone else was going 100% out of the gate, their energy was slowly depleting.

Lewis went 85% out of the gate, at a consistent rate for the entire 100-meters, passing everyone else in the final stretch.
6/ What can we learn from this?

We're humans. In life, in work, in hobbies, on your side hustle - don't go all out all the time.

Working out 20 minutes/day for a year will pay off more than working out for 2 hours every two weeks.
