So Cuties (Mignonnes) is making a lot of folk seem so very naive. I don’t understand how one could exist with the forms of popular culture that surround young people on the daily and act so disgusted by things many of us participated in as children. Some more so than others.
I grew up in a VERY Christian home, and I recall the joy and curiosity of “hypersexualized” music and movements. Are we seriously going to do this? I think the film was heartbreaking and frankly it reminded of all the things that young Black girls, those who are misgendered...
...as such and Black girls who are not rendered legible (marked as Black boys) have to endure.
If anything, this film has further motivated me to pay attention to Black girls and Black youth (I already was). But the punitivity is harming them. Then they go into hiding and really explore some of the most shocking things.
Are we going to seriously pretend like everything that we did, we wanted for grown people to see or know about us?
I woke up thinking about this film.
And the pedophilic chant? What the hell were some of you watching?

I actually think that I’m just as disturbed by the claims and just how little people actually know about child predators.
The same folk who will say this film (directed by a Black woman) was created for pedophiles, are the same folk who would argue that an attraction to short women means that folk are pedophiles.
I am sick of people naming so many things as “child pornography” and sexualization of children, except for those actual things. Wow.
I also have no faith that some of you actually know how to address young people who are curious about sexuality and you wonder why they exhibit certain behaviors. You treat them like monstrosities, they will more than likely explore that positionality further.
It seems horrific to be a child during the age of social media. A lot has changed and they access to so much.

For Gen Y, it was clear we were being exposed to more. But now? Oh this is different.
I also know that when Black girls want to explore and they want to learn we MUST listen to them and find ways to keep them safe while honoring and understanding their desires.
