A THREAD ON WHY SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVISM IS A REAL THING :

firstly, social media and its algorithms allow for awareness to be created and for news to spread 10× faster than ANYTHING that our unreliable and politically biased media displays on the news channels. (1/n)

secondly, nearly half of our current generation has access to apps like ig, twt, fb, whatsapp and they spend a lot more time using these apps than watching or reading the news. almost all the info is virtually transmitted to them and to others. (2/n)

thirdly, it's not possible for a large section of people to head out mid-pandemic and attend protests and rallies held for various social causes. social media activism allows for people to actually participate and show their solidarity with the movement from their homes. (3/n)

as I mentioned in the first point, the algorithm does wonders. not only do important issues regarding sexism, casteism etc get more traction but they also spread fast enough to international media and it brings powerful results (people all over the world protested for BLM). (4/n)

people with a massive following, influencers and content creators have the opportunity to spread awareness and it creates a much larger impact than the headlines do. these people are role models to many and they set a prime example regarding the ethical use of social media. (5/n)

ig, twt, pinterest, tumblr etc provide a brilliant platform for artists, writers, musicians to channel their rage and empathy while amplifying the voices of the oppressed through their art. creative expression has the power to move people beyond ordinary words on paper. (6/n)

social media, if used properly, is a powerful weapon. if the youth uses it properly, it can help educate and bring resonating change in the world. activists like greta thunberg, aoc, etc have learnt to build on their cause using social media and their reach has done marvels (7/n)

I just wanna end this thread by saying this, PLEASE USE THE PLATFORMS AVAILED TO YOU TO BRING A CHANGE. THE RESOURCES ARE RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU AND IT IS SO EASY TO BE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY IF YOU JUST GOT OFF YOUR ASSES AND SHOWED THAT YOU CARE TOO. #DLM
