Since we're doing it, here's four thoughts to contribute to the Anglican Twitter discourse on the Daily Office (daily morning and evening prayer for those who don't speak the lingo):
1) It is always good to pray the daily office. Taking 15-25 minutes at the start and end of the working day (or at other points) is an important part of Christian discipleship. We should be encouraging daily morning and evening prayer for all, not just the clergy.
2) "The measure you give will be the measure you get." If you've never rushed through the office to get to the next thing you have to do, or never forgotten it, or never skipped it because you were on holiday etc., then do please lay down the strictures. If not, well...
3) It is okay to pray morning prayer at 11:30am or evening prayer at 11:30pm because that is the kind of day it has been, and the kids were up all last night etc. This does not preclude there also being an 'ideal' of morning and evening prayer at the 'proper times'.
3a) Provided we acknowledge that the normative shape of the western office is a sevenfold office, not a twofold one, so 'proper times' are a bit relative. The 'Anglican' office is shaped by the state's persecution of the church, not natural historical development.
4) It is not okay to not do the office. If you are in ordained ministry in the CofE, you must pray the office. It is a core part of your role as a deacon/priest/bishop. It is not a matter of personal choice, circumstances or individual spirituality. This is what we do.
