He really was the best dog.
It was full and heavy hearts that we share with you the passing of our Freddy. Fred's health took a sudden turn late Wednesday evening and after consulting with staff at the Vet College, we made the hard decision to say goodbye...

We were there in the room with him and he passed very peacefully with no pain.
Where to start with Fred. He truly brought joy and happiness to everyone he met. He was unlike any dog we've ever met...

His personality instantly connected with people, and there was no hiding his personality! He loved barking at everything from rabbits and birds to postal workers and even us when we tried to sneak in a kiss on the couch.
Fred had incredible empathy. He always knew when you needed a snuggle or even a shoulder to cry on. He also knew when you were excited and fed off of that energy. He was full of pep right until his last few hours with us.
He loved exploring Cranberry Flats and barking at the deer that were often feeding in the ditches just outside the park. He loved hopping in the car with us and heading to a different park in the city to explore and mark his territory. He loved life and we loved that so much.
Fred loved people. He loved visiting the farm and sitting on Lyle's knee at the dinner table wondering when, not if, he would get a taste of Pam's wonderful cooking. He loved barking in Gary and Katie's backyard in Winnipeg at all of the squirrels who were far too comfortable...
for his liking. He loved visiting Coreen and Mal's place in Regina and barking at all the Rider fans walking by on their way to the game. He loved seeing Jen at school and visiting the residents at Sherbrooke.
The past 18 months or so saw Fred deal with some health issues relating to his kidneys and anxiety. We worked really hard with him to ensure he had the very best life possible because he was so worth it, and he gave us so much in return.
He gave us endless amounts of love and happiness that will last a lifetime. He gave us memories that will make us laugh and smile and even shake our heads. He gave us purpose and opened so many doors for us...
There's no way we would have been invited to the Meewasin Valley Authority's Christmas Party a few years ago if not for Fred...
Fred's last health scare came in early May when he spent four days in the ICU with kidney issues. When he returned home, we were unsure if and how he would bounce back. It took a few weeks but soon he was back to his old self...
and we are so grateful that he had such a great summer with us. He loved the new house and neighbourhood and we went on so many adventures within the city that usually ended with him trying to lick Jen's ice cream cone on the way home.
We are definitely grieving and it's going to take time to come to terms with this. Anyone who says a dog is not a part of your family has never had a dog...and especially never had a Freddy.
But we are forever grateful to have had him in our lives for so long...Eric for six and Jen for 12 years. There will never be another Fred and we are so lucky to have called him our dear friend for all of these years.
Thank you to the staff at the Vet College for taking such good care of him in his last hours. Thank you to Nikki and her team at The Mutt Hutt for always showing him love on his visits. A big thank you to the team at Arlington Animal Hospital for caring for him these past 12 yrs
