This is how you motivate high-performers, you offer a spark, and let their inner fire fuel the inferno.
Mourinho gave a masterclass on coaching.

If you're interested in what just happened in this 2-minute conversation between Mourinho and Dele Alli, read on. 👇👇👇
1: Provocative coaching

Mourinho states he always thought his performance has been up and down. This is more than just his honest opinion, this is him trying to get Dele Alli emotionally involved in the conversation. That's an essential part of an effective coaching session.
2: Insinuation
'I don't know, maybe it's your lifestyle.'
Insinuating has 2 outcomes that are both great.

If it actually IS his lifestyle, then he now knows that Mourinho is aware of this behavior.

If it is NOT his lifestyle, he will feel more inclined to open up about it.
3: Self-accountability
He says 'I want you to want to be better.' This is self-accountability, he doesn't want him to be relying on external motivators. He wants him to push himself.

He doesn't want him to do it for the coach, but do it because he wants to be better.
4: Sandwich method
He starts the conversation with a positive note. 'I always thought you had great potential.' In the middle of the conversation, there is criticism and in the end, he offers hope, solution, and support. The little 'thank you, mate' was beautiful.
5: Personal touch
All great coaches add a personal touch to their work. Mourinho touches on how he felt that time went by fast.

This conveys honesty, vulnerability, authenticity and you can never disagree with personal experience. It creates a deeper, personal relationship.
6: Professional wisdom
Coaches study all the time and they know a lot. In order to gain the respect of the client, it's good to sometimes portray your professional wisdom.

He speaks about consistency and you see Dele Alli nod his head, he respects his knowledge.
7: Realistic goals
He speaks about what he expects from Dele Ali and makes it clear he is not setting unattainable goals.

He intends to RAISE HIS AWARENESS.

It's about self-reflection, self-accountability, and changing the attitude, not simply about scoring more goals.
These things show me that Mourinho is an incredible life coach, not just a football coach.

Every little thing he said in this conversation was 100% intentional and I think this is part of his massive success.
