To anyone researching climate fiction: a warning about Dan Bloom, who has sent me abusive emails (among other things, belittling me as a 'lazy girl').
As far as I can tell, Dan is responsible for coining the phrase #clifi, a claim I have always attributed to him in my work and about which I have written positively. He has done much to publicise climate fiction.
However, Dan is protective of the term and often irritable (to put it mildly) with those who discuss climate fiction and do not use the 'cli-fi' label. He tried to call me out for not talking about 'cli-fi' in my recent interview with @GaryRaymond_ for @WalesArtsReview.
When I pointed out I had, he took issue with what I said about him. If you read the interview, you can see I am largely positive about how he has raised awareness about climate fiction, but am pointing to his extremely aggressive position on cli-fi.
His email to me (see the start of this thread) bears this out, (and a follow-up email, equally insulting). Dan has done some good things for climate fiction studies, but scholars (and, by the tone of his email, I'd say female scholars) should beware of his tendency to be abusive.
This is why I have blocked his emails and blocked him on Twitter.
